Network (2018)

For audience with smartphones and/or computers [4:00].

In Network, the audience scrolls through and stylistically reads words from a YouTube track in which the temporal dimension of the form is closely connected to the spatial dimension of the form: characteristics of the visual text are spatially organized according to the number of residents, average home size, and weather, of the states of the USA, as well as the alphabet. The track gradually scans from the West to the East of the USA, and from beginning to end of the alphabet.

The sonic component of the track is made up of the audience speaking in addition to the first ten harmonics of a 400 Hz square wave. Each harmonic changes in phase many times during the piece. The track is organized into thirteen sections, each of which has a different average rate of phase-change and a different amount of possible deviation from the average rate.

If the audience size is very small, a feeling of vast unexplored territory will arise from their small amount of collective coverage of the YouTube track. If the audience size is very large, a feeling of constrainment will arise from their repeated collective coverage of the YouTube track.
